Reader’s Question:

How do I estimate the right amount of life insurance that I should buy?

Leica

Glendale, AZ

Knowing how to choose the right amount of life insurance coverage is essential for anyone wanting to purchase this kind of financial asset. Listed below are some of the most important factors that you should consider:

1. Expenses upon Death - Estimate how much money may be needed at the time of your death. This should include funeral costs, final expenses, and estate taxes.

2. Financial Obligations – You don’t want to leave your family/dependents a pile of debt upon your demise, right? Include mortgage balance, credit card debt, loans, and other financial obligations that you don’t want to burden your loved ones with.

3. Dependent’s Cost of Living – This would include supplementing the lost income that you bring. It should also include expenses for the basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. Social security survivorship benefits should also be factored in.

4. Calculating Years of Need – Buy coverage that can cover your dependents’ cost of living for at least the next several years.

5. Non-Monetary Income – A good example of this is medical insurance which is usually subsidized by your employer (and may be lost after your death). Factor these in as well.

6. Future Financial Needs – Include adequate amount of money for your kids’ college needs, or for your spouse’s retirement.

7. Other Income-Producing Assets – You may have a business on the side, or another source of income that will be lost once you pass away. This must also be included in your coverage estimate.

The total of these seven factors should give you a good idea of just exactly how much life insurance coverage amount your policy should carry. It wouldn’t hurt to get more if you can easily afford to do so. Discount life insurance rates and offers are also easily obtainable online, so you may want to check out life insurance comparison websites (like this one) and run a free rate quote check.

Reader’s Question:

I’ve found a lot of companies in Arizona offering term life insurance online. Can you help me determine the average cost of term life insurance so that I may be able to make a wise decision on this matter?

Courtney

Phoenix AZ

There are basically two types of life insurance: the term life insurance and the whole life insurance. Browsing through the Internet, you will find out that the cost of term life insurance is lower than the cost of whole life insurance. Why? Because you will only be protected in a certain period of time unlike a whole life insurance in which you will be covered for a lifetime.

The cost of term life insurance is generally cheaper because unlike other life insurances such as the whole life insurance, this insurance policy will not grow in value since it does not have the option for the insurance companies to invest a portion of your premium into various investment vehicles such as the stock market. In short, there are no additional benefits in a term life insurance. It is just purely insurance, being the simplest form of life insurance.

A term life insurance is renewable. This means that at the end of the insurance policy term, you can renew your policy so that you will have continuous insurance coverage. In most cases, this type of insurance can be renewed without going through a series of medical examinations. However, term life insurance may be more expensive when renewed because insurance companies see an increased risk of death the older you are.

There are no right or wrong answer as to what the average cost of term life insurance in the market is. This is because the price of your life insurance will basically depend on your age and gender and the companies’ policy, insurance coverage offered, among other factors.

However, you can do a little comparison shopping around the Internet to find the cheapest term life insurance for you. Some web sites will offer free quotations of term life insurance from various companies depending on the information you have disclosed in their system. In this way, you will be able to sort through the various quotations and determine which companies will give you the greatest value at the lowest price.

I want to make sure that my kids are covered now that I’m the only one raising them. How do I begin looking for quality life insurance here in Arizona?

Genevieve

Phoenix, AZ

The right life insurance policy can be a great asset to you and your kids. Here are some tips to guide you in selecting quality life insurance coverage:

Step 1: Choose the Right Coverage Type

Term and Whole life coverage are the two main types of life insurance. Those raising a family or paying mortgage can benefit from the cheap and temporary (5, 10, 30 year policies) coverage of term life. Whole life is for people wanting to accumulate wealth with lifetime coverage by paying more premiums. See which one fits your needs.

Step 2: Calculate How Much Coverage You Need

Next you need to know how much coverage or “Face Value” you should buy. Factor in your total annual income, living expenses, financial obligations (e.g. Mortgage) and other financial needs that your beneficiaries might lose should you suddenly pass away. Buy coverage that can cover your kids’ needs for at least the next five years.

Step 3: Compare Quotes

Get a free Arizona life insurance quote through a life insurance comparison website. This is an excellent way to save time while shopping around for the best rates today. Maximize your ability to save while still getting quality coverage.

Step 4: Check Out Consumer Rating Agencies

Moody’s, J.D. Powers and A.M Best (Independent Rating Agencies) give valuable information to help consumers identify the best-performing companies – and insurers – today.

Step 5: Save Some More

Don’t forget to ask if you qualify for any sort of discounts. Choosing a higher face value amount may also give you better premiums. An annual payment setup discounts can also reduce total life insurance expenses.

I’m interested in getting life insurance in Arizona to cover me, what are the things that can help me get low-cost life insurance coverage here? Thanks!

Candace

Phoenix, AZ

Excellent question! Life insurance is certainly one of the most important investments you can make in your life. Done right, it can give you the peace of mind knowing that you’re family is taken cared of should you make a early exit in this world. Here are some excellent suggestions to help you save hundreds of dollars a year on affordable life insurance in Arizona (or anywhere):

Focus On What You Need

Getting the right life insurance policy is crucial, this is something you’ll be paying for years, decades even, and you don’t want to throw money on the wrong thing. Assess your financial goals and the needs of your family or dependents once you’re gone.

Are you raising a family or paying long-term obligations like mortgage? You may want term life insurance which is a cheap and straight-forward pure life cover that lasts only a definite period of time. Want to accumulate your wealth – with interest – until well into your golden years? Then a permanent or whole life insurance plan could be just what you’re looking for.

Smokers Pay More

A good incentive to quit smoking; insurers charge rates three to four times as much for smokers than for non-smokers. If you stay off any nicotine-based products (tobacco, cigars etc.) for three years you can enjoy a non-smokers rate which is definitely cheaper.

Skip Group Life Insurance

Most group life policies can be more expensive compared to individual life policies. High-risk members tend to make coverage more expensive for the whole group, so try to stick to individual coverage.

Reconsider That Physical Test

Especially if you are relatively young and healthy, taking that annual or pre-requisite medical exam can save you hundreds! Those go with no-exam policies are automatically put under the high-risk category, and thus more expensive premiums.

Shop Online

The Web is full of life insurance portals (like this website) allowing easy and free access to the latest rates, coming from a wide variety of insurers in your area. This means you get to compare your options more accurately, therefore maximizing the chance of getting affordable life insurance in Arizona.

Reader’s Question:

I will need to get life insurance coverage here in Arizona but only for a temporary period of time only. I’ve head about term life insurance coverage, is this the best kind of insurance policy that I need?

Julius

Arivaca, AZ

Term Life Insurance is a type of life plan that is only meant to be maintained for usually short-period’s of time and gives you a simple, straight-forward coverage to your beneficiaries in case something happens to you during the coverage term period. If this is what you are looking for exactly that, something similar or otherwise don’t see any reason to get a permanent life insurance coverage then Term Life Insurance would be the best type of policy for you there in Arizona.

Another reason to go with term life insurance is that it is a much more affordable kind of life insurance but would still have a relatively higher “Face Value” (also known as the total amount of death benefits to be awarded to your beneficiaries, as agreed upon on the coverage terms). This kind of insurance plan is good for those who have hazardous occupations, are paying mortgage or long-term debts, sending someone to school or maybe someone who is raising a small family, this is especially practical for single-parent households.

You may be given term options lasting anywhere from a year-long up to ten to twenty-year long policies. Choose your coverage period carefully since term life insurance premiums become much more expensive as you grow older, should you decide to renew it in the future. You can use this website to run free life insurance quote checks to get the most affordable term life insurance plan and compare offers from many carriers easily.

Dexter

Phoenix, AZ

You are right, term life insurance policies are quite cheap. But is this the kind of policy that is right for you?

With regards to your question, if it would be better to take advantage of low term insurance premiums and just renew afterwards, might be just fine in the short-run (like for the next ten years or so) but how about for the long haul? Since it seems that you prefer to have life insurance coverage for the rest of your life, let me help you avoid a common pitfall about term life insurance.

Term life insurance gets more expensive as you age, you may have been able to secure a good rate when you were younger (and healthier) but there is no guarantee you will get the same low rates again. You may have develop some illness or a medical condition making you un-insurable. You may already be too old by the time your policy expires, making the cost of renewing your term life prohibitively expensive.

Simply put it, you will spend a lot more in the long-run if you keep on renewing a term life policy. You are better off with a whole life policy that may be more expensive, initially, but will slowly become more affordable over time and would tuck away part of your money to grow and be available future needs. Or at least consider a guaranteed renewable term life policy that would allow you to go whole life in the future.

Reader’s Question:

Is there a type of life insurance policy that can also act as an investment vehicle for my retirement money here in Arizona?

Alistaire

Phoenix, AZ

Yes, there are types of life insurance available that can grow your money as you pay for it over the years, as well as maintain adequate amounts of life insurance coverage. And it is excellent that you are aware and specific about the goals you would want your life insurance policy there in Arizona to achieve. The nearest type of policy matching your requirements would have to be a Whole Life or Permanent Life Insurance Policy, specifically a Universal Life and Variable Life Insurance Policy. With these policies you would have a higher regular premium, however, a part of what you pay for life insurance goes into a type of savings account which accumulates cash-value and earns interest.

With a traditional whole life policy, your cash-value earns interest conservatively and the aim is for long-term growth. Universal Life Insurance will usually have a fund that is a pool of their policy holder’s premiums that is invested into diverse assets. Your premiums can also be adjusted depending on the goals of your policy, or how the economy is performing to preserve your policy’s cash-value. With Variable Life Insurance you are given more flexibility on where you choose to invest your cash-value and also allow multiple adjustments to be made into your policy’s death benefits every year. All of these policies are meant to be maintained for at least ten to fifteen years before you begin to really notice the growth of your money.

Reader’s Question:

How do I choose what kind of life insurance is best for me, and my family here in Arizona?

Sarah

Phoenix, AZ

There are many ways of choosing a life insurance but how do you know you’re choosing the best one? It’s a huge commitment and you want to make sure that the policy you choose for you, your loved ones, and your family would be best suited to your needs there in Arizona.

So here are a few tips to help you get the best life insurance policy out there:

1. Base your purchase on your family’s needs – decide on a life insurance plan that will benefit your family the most. A whole life insurance plan may be a better option than a term life insurance policy since the former would provide complete coverage for you until your demise. There are lots of policies out there to choose from so already knowing what kind of benefits and features you want your policy to have will greatly narrow down your choices.

2. Determine your combined income – How much do you, or if you’re married, your spouse earn in a month? Knowing how much you bring in everyone and how much income is spent on the family will help you target the ideal life insurance coverage amount for your family. Preferably insure the person who earns the most significant amount of the household income.

3. Compare – Don’t just stick with one life insurance offer. Get at least five policies that you have narrowed down from your search and compare rates.
